HLTAID009 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation is a nationally recognised unit of competency from the HLT Health Training Package. It covers the skills and knowledge needed to recognise a person who isn't breathing, perform CPR on adults and infants, and use a defibrillator (AED), in line with the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).
It supersedes, but is not equivalent to, HLTAID001 - Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as of October 2020.
Who develops the unit
The HLT Health Training Package is maintained by HumanAbility, the Jobs and Skills Council for the care and support economy. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates the registered training organisations (RTOs) that deliver it.
Who needs HLTAID009
- First Aiders renewing their CPR. HLTAID009 is included in a First Aid (HLTAID011) or Childcare First Aid (HLTAID012) course, and it's the unit you refresh every 12 months in between.
- Jobs that ask for CPR only, such as fitness instructors, personal trainers, swim teachers and some health and community roles.
- Electricians and safety observers, who need CPR every 12 months together with Low Voltage Rescue. Our LVR & CPR course covers both.
- Anyone who wants the life-saving basics for home, sport or volunteering.
What the unit covers
To be assessed as competent, you must show you can, in line with ARC guidelines:
- Manage an unconscious casualty who is breathing, including placing them in a position that protects their airway
- Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin on the floor
- Follow the prompts of a defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- Swap rescuers during CPR with minimal interruption to compressions
- Respond if the casualty vomits or regurgitates
- Perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant manikin
- Hand over to emergency services, give an accurate verbal report and review the incident
You can view the full requirements on the HLTAID009 page on training.gov.au.
How often to renew
The unit itself doesn't expire, but CPR skills fade quickly. The First aid in the workplace Code of Practice recommends refreshing CPR every 12 months, and most employers follow it. Read more about how long First Aid and CPR certificates last.
