HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting

HLTAID012 - Provide First Aid in an education and care setting is a nationally recognised unit of competency from the HLT Health Training Package. It covers the skills and knowledge needed to provide a first aid response to infants and children, including asthma and anaphylaxis emergencies, in line with the guidelines of the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC).

It applies to workers in education and care settings, including early childhood educators and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care (OSHC) and vacation programs. It supersedes, but is not equivalent to, HLTAID004 - Provide an emergency first aid response in an education and care setting, as of October 2020.

Who develops the unit

The HLT Health Training Package is maintained by HumanAbility, the Jobs and Skills Council for the care and support economy. The Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) regulates the registered training organisations (RTOs) that deliver it.

ACECQA approval

Education and care services must have staff with approved first aid, emergency asthma management and anaphylaxis management training. HLTAID012 is on ACECQA's list of approved first aid qualifications, and it meets all three requirements in one course. ACECQA approves the qualification, not individual training providers, so it's delivered by RTOs that have HLTAID012 on their scope of registration.

What the unit covers

To be assessed as competent, you must show you can manage the following, in line with ARC guidelines:

  • CPR on an adult, a child and an infant, each for at least 2 minutes without interruption
  • Using a defibrillator (AED), including on children
  • An unconscious casualty who is breathing
  • Asthma, using a reliever puffer and spacer
  • Anaphylaxis, using an adrenaline autoinjector
  • Choking in children and infants
  • Bleeding, minor wounds and nosebleeds
  • Fractures, dislocations, sprains and strains
  • Snake and spider bites, using pressure immobilisation
  • Shock
  • A simulated incident involving a child or infant, including a verbal and written incident report

The unit can be assessed in a simulated environment, using adult, child and infant resuscitation manikins, AED and autoinjector training devices, and a placebo puffer and spacer. You can view the full requirements on the HLTAID012 page on training.gov.au.

How often to renew

The unit itself doesn't expire, but to stay current for education and care, approved first aid, asthma and anaphylaxis training should be completed every 3 years, and CPR (HLTAID009) refreshed every 12 months. Between renewals you can keep your CPR current with our 1.5-hour CPR course.
